How It Works
An anemometer is one of the most essential tools for wind measurement. There are many types of anemometer used depending on application — from classic rotational cup/vane designs to more advanced models.
- Cup or vane anemometers remain widespread, with spinning cups or propellers that rotate faster when wind speed increases. The rotation rate is translated into wind speed.
- For more sensitive measurements, thermal (hot-wire / wire anemometers) use a thin heated wire: as air flows over the wire, it cools at a rate proportional to wind speed, and the change in resistance allows calculation of airflow velocity.
- Another advanced method — ultrasonic or sonic anemometers — uses sound waves: pairs of transducers emit ultrasonic pulses, and by measuring the time it takes for the pulses to travel between transducers, the device precisely computes wind speed and even direction. Because there are no moving parts, these are ideal for weather stations or long-term installations exposed to harsh conditions.
